duffy london releases new, streamlined edition of its acclaimed abyss horizon table

Duffy London casts an eye downwards once again with a captivating new coffee table design as part of its highly praised Abyss Horizon collection. With its deep, turquoise-blue chasm seemingly floating effortlessly above free space, the 2023 model is launching as a limited edition of 25 and is also offered with a base section in white Carrara marble for the very first time. Moreover, the exclusive launch echoes a limited edition of the original table, acquired in 2019 by the Musée des Arts Décoratifs at The Louvre in Paris to become part of the permanent French National collection.

Like all of Duffy London’s concept-based creations, the inspiration comes from an initial study of depth and how we perceive it. The design makes use of the interplay between light and layers of the natural Birchwood or marble coloration and sculpted blue glass to forge a mesmerizing, three-dimensional canvas — reminiscent of how we observe the color of water transform at different depths. The perceived change in color gives true meaning to the piece, conjuring up ideas of a great oceanic topography and transforming the flowing design into an expressive object.

‘For this piece, I wanted to achieve something very pure; a streamlined and elegant Abyss design that accentuates the overall visual effect, the wow factor!  By redesigning the base section with slim legs to give a more graceful profile, we are also helping to focus the attention on the table-top more,’ shares Christopher Duffy.

 

For the Abyss Horizon 2023 edition, three curved legs support a dramatic, contoured base section that appears to collapse downwards into the floor. Furthermore, the free, physical space around the edges of the table focuses the senses and enhances our view of a great, floating Abyss with a colossal sinkhole at its center.

In a design first, and following on from its hand-sculpted and CNC’d marble table designs for Civilization and Monument Valley, Duffy London is now able to offer the table with the base section carved from a single block of White Italian Carrara Marble. The interaction of the marble and blue-tinted glass provides a purer blue, with an almost arctic-like effect, linking to Christopher Duffy’s original inspiration for the table to mirror the depth and aesthetic of icebergs.

 

Each edition piece is designed and handmade to order in London by Christopher Duffy and the Duffy London team. In addition to the marble and birchwood finishing options for the base section, the table is offered in a 120cm or 140cm diameter.
