Taeg Nishimoto uses spontaneous geometries in his collection

Taeg Nishimoto unveils his ‘lines and dots’ collection, featuring a side table and a free-standing shelf, each crafted using a combination of clay, wood, sisal twine, discarded concrete chunks, and liquid rubber. These designs reveal spontaneous geometries distinct from organic shapes. Vertical lines, beginning at the base and intertwining randomly as they ascend, provide stability and create an unexpected continuity. Sisal twine, attached to the concrete chunk at the base, determines the positioning and direction of these lines, which penetrate horizontal wooden planes up to the top. This twine is then hand-covered with clay, a technique reminiscent of Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti, leaving visible finger marks. Finally, the clay lines are detailed with black dots, and applied with liquid rubber, enhancing the optical materiality and spatial depth of the object.

Lines and Dots series’ clay forms evoke sense of vertical growth

The horizontal wood planes, functioning as shelves and the top surface, are intentionally shaped by Taeg Nishimoto with a roundness that is not perfectly circular. Once the twine lines are fully covered with clay, the entire structure, including the concrete base, clay lines, and wood planes, is coated with white liquid rubber. The Japanese designer unifies the materials with this treatment, giving the impression of a singular, unknown substance. The design evokes a sense of vertical growth, transitioning from the heavy concrete base to the ascending dotted lines, creating an image of a new kind of nature. When vibrant items are placed on the shelves, the white lines with black dots create a kinetic effect, bringing the structure to life with movement and color. The dimensions of the side table are 55 x 48 x 60 cm (H), while the free-standing shelf measures 56 x 50 x 115 cm (H).
