KOSMOS Architects’ rotatable wooden furniture, DICE
KOSMOS Architects creates The DICE, a design furniture object that combines a stool, a coffee table, a leg bench, and a lamp in a single portable and multifunctional piece. All at once and none at all: this mantra permeates the wooden piece of furniture whose concept lies in bridging the four aforementioned different basic furniture typologies. The dice, which was shown during Milan Design Week 2024, became the core of the design and the starting point for KOSMOS Architects. They were fascinated by the differing numbers and dots on the square toy enough to transform the palm-sized cube into a real-life multifunctional wooden piece of furniture that the user can rotate depending on what functionality they want to use.

Portable ‘dice’ furniture that can fit in a handbag
The two round legs of the portable and multifunctional DICE can help prop up the design object when the user sits down and uses it as a stool. Up close, there’s a triangular support at the bottom from the first leg and the tips of the lamp and table parts. When the user rotates it again to use the table, the stool becomes the support. Even with its round surface, it doesn’t roll around with the help of the second leg and the lamp’s pointed edge. This KOSMOS Architects piece of wooden furniture is also lightweight enough to be hung for when the user raises the lamp and lets it spread light from above. They can also bring DICE with them anywhere since the portable wooden furniture can fit in a handbag for their trips and excursions.
Sculpted from warm oak using robot arm
A pragmatic piece of wooden furniture, KOSMOS Architects’ multifunctional DICE is shaped and sculpted by a robot arm from its 3D design. Working with KUKA robotics technology, the robot arm chiseled the multifunctional wooden furniture from warm oak before the craftsmen ground and oiled the resulting piece by hand. A hollow inside was carved for the lamp part of The DICE, the space dedicated for wireless and rechargeable triangular lighting, wrapped with frosted glass for protection, in one of the corners of the design object. KOSMOS Architects maintained the classic color of the wood, making the piece of furniture act as a sculpture for spaces too.
DICE was created by KOSMOS Architects as part of a special SAMPLE project in collaboration with the Vaults Center for Artistic Production. The piece of wooden furniture was recently exhibited at Milan Design Week 2024 as part of F/A (EXTRA)ORDINARY by the Fake/Authentic Gallery, hosted by DropCity at Via Sammartini in Milan. SAMPLE DESIGN is a curated selection of collectibles and studio designs. It gathers furniture, home decor, and artworks made in collaboration with architects, contemporary artisans, independent designers, and artists.
