for this year’s stockholm design week, norwegian designer daniel rybakken has collaborated with finish furniture company artek in a new collection comprised of mirrors and a range of storage and seating. the pieces address the question of what it means to be a contemporary artek product and how to be part of the brand’s ‘domestic helpers’ — a long-established compilation of furniture objects that support and work in concert with the main events of any interior. the resulting set ‘shares artek’s fundamental interest in bringing together the realms of art and technology,’ comments marianne goebl, artek managing director.

‘kiila’ -a range of useful and versatile small furniture objects

the ‘kiila’ range by daniel rybakken for artek at stockholm design week is a family of useful and versatile small furniture objects designed with hallways and entrances in mind, aiding organization and tidiness. made of a coat stand, a coat rack, a podium and a bench, the ’kiila’ system includes a unique wedge-shaped joint made from powder-coated metal onto which solid wooden legs are fitted. this detail has given the name to the whole range as kiila translates as ‘wedge’ in finnish.

‘there is a very apparent logic to the ‘kiila’ series and I recognize this in alvar aalto’s (artek’s founder) designs too,’ comments rybakken. ‘these are products designed within the parameters of industrial manufacture, they are intended to be part of a system that can be repeated.’

the second addition to the collection is a set of mirrors called 124º

called 124º, these wall-mounted mirrors have a sculptural quality that plays with space. composed of two faces placed at 124 degrees from each other, the reflections they create are unexpected. made from mirror polished sheet steel, the mirrors are available in three different variations, including one with an integrated wooden shelf. with them, rybakken continues his extensive research around the subjects of natural light and image.
