tokyo-based daisuke motogi / DDAA LAB presents 100 modification ideas on alvar aalto’s elemental ‘stool 60’ designed for artek in 1933. ‘stool 60’, one of the most widely-recognized designs of the 20th century, is simple and versatile, with bent wood technology and a sinuous shape that allows for layering and stacking.
beginning on june 23, 2020, daisuke motogi / DDAA LAB has released one of its adaptations on ‘stool 60’ per day via social media as part of the ‘hackability of the stool’ project. the series of works seeks to add diverse, niche, and modest functions to the object, which had been omitted out in the process of designing.
#26 ARM REST
‘this is an assemblage of research and ideas based on mass-production that could keep the advantage of modernism and mass-produced products, and produce many products in a small lot,’ says the team at daisuke motogi / DDAA LAB. ‘you can make useful and diverse products as easily as possible.’ numbered from 1-100 configurations on the classic ‘stool 60’ that form part of the ‘hackability of the stool’ project include a turntable, an ironing board, a clock, and cat basket.
