The UNPLAYABALL, imagined by creative duo Oliver Binnian and Willem Slegers, is set to draw attention to the barriers faced by women in the sporting world with its unconventional and somewhat impractical design. ‘With this unique square-shaped ball, we want to highlight the issues that women and girls face every time they step on to the pitch,’ notes Binnian.

In an industry marked by discriminatory stereotypes, gender pay gaps, limited media coverage, and inadequate facilities, women’s football has long had to navigate a string of challenges. ‘You could say it’s like playing with a square ball. Impossible,’ Oliver Binnian adds. However, the UNPLAYABALL’s square shape serves as a powerful metaphor, representing the difficulties that female players encounter every time they step onto the pitch. This football concept, despite being unofficial, stands as a symbol of empowerment and progress, urging for advocation for the advancement of women’s football.

Design duo Oliver Binnian and Willem Slegers, from England and the Netherlands respectively, currently work together at DDB Amsterdam/180 Amsterdam. With a diverse background on design and focusing on creating concepts that are both entertaining and purposeful, they aim to translate simple yet impactful ideas into film, activations, and digital campaigns.
