camille walala's corridor of colorful furniture reshapes london street

bursting with vivid shades and shapes, camille walala builds a bold set of outdoor furniture on south molton street during london design festival 2019. called the walala lounge, the fully pedestrian street – lined with shops and cafes – becomes a place for people to chat and relax while in the center of the british capital. at the same time, however, the walkway is transformed into an energizing, enlivening ‘immersive corridor of color’ in the typical memphis-inspired manner of the french-born designer.

the walala lounge comprises 10 sculptural benches in monumental geometric proportions. made from brushed steel and MDF, the designs distinguish an unpredictable array of cuboid, cylinders and arches, each with equally as random head-turning colors. some of the sculptures sit on rug-like bases while others are accompanied by free-standing or fully integrated planters. last but not least, a series of oversized, colorful flags string across south molton street like bunting.

camille walala’s street furniture for london design festival 2019 builds upon her colorful transformations around the city, following her temporary villa walala installation at the festival two years before. unlike the inflatable, the walala lounge is set to stay in place for at least a year.
