as countries around the world begin to reopen public spaces in the wake of COVID-19, burger king has a new and fun way to ensure their customers follow social distancing rules in germany. initially created for a german TV gimmick spot, the social distance crowns made its rounds to campaign for safety in an ironic manner. true? or a viral marketing initiative?

it seems that the fast food giant adopted the social distance crowns concept for a test run. earlier today, on may 22, burger king germany posted on socials that some restaurants are handing out the crowns (folded and users have to make them themselves). ‘we wanted to re-enforce the rules of high safety and hygiene standards that the BK restaurants are following,’ a burger king representative told business insider. ‘the do-it-yourself social distance crown was a fun and playful way to remind our guests to practice social distancing while they are enjoying food in the restaurants.’

business insider also reports that burger king has unveiled other initiatives to stop the spread of the COVID-19 as people are allowed to go outside again. another example of a ‘fun campaign’ is in italy where the food chain seems to sell a social distancing whopper — a burger that has three times the amount of raw onions. why? to give people bad breath and keep them farther away.
