celebrating its 10th anniversary, ‘budapest design week 2013′ marks the growing interest in design in hungary. this year’s event was based on the theme of ‘crossovers’, and the guest of honor was italy — highlighted by the presence of michele de lucchi and several special activities and presentations of italian design. the hub of ‘design het’ is appropriately located at the ‘design terminal’, a converted bus station, where samu szemerey has curated a visual discussion of creative endeavors and their boundaries and overlap among storytelling, craft, nature and technology. from here the festival spread out into the city with galleries and venues hosting openings, various walking tours, restaurants participating with special menus, public participatory workshops, and open design studios.

local restaurants participated in design week with menus serving up local specialties with a twist, or italian-influenced dishes honoring this year’s host country. fruccola is one such eatery, where the hearty quality of the organic food and juices they serve is reflected in the restaurant’s design. herbs grow up the wall from paper take away containers. owner petra saás designed lampshades made of compostable cutlery (shown below), which finish the luminaires above eating areas and the service counter.

local organization hosszúlépés researched and led a ‘street food walk for gastro fans,’ covering the history of culinary design and culture in europe and budapest. hard hit by the economic crisis, many hungarians find it easier to splurge on a meal out than on other forms of art. thus, gastronomic culture booms in the capital.
