‘garment’ is the first collaboration between italian furniture company cappellini and british designer benjamin hubert that was on show at the 2012 salone del mobile, milan, italy. it is a lounge club chair with a unique approach to the application and construction of textiles in the design industry. the object is a study into how to ’dress’ a piece of furniture defying the conventional rules and manufacturing of typical upholstery. a single piece of fabric is loosely folded around a distinctive geometric polyurethane form. the layout and loose cover allows for creases to become part of the character of the chair reminiscent of a piece of fashion and increases the sensation of visual softness. the ‘stitchless’ production is comprised of a single sheet of cloth fixed onto the body with velcro. the furnishing is detailed with inverted box pleats reinforcing this relationship with clothing. the cover can also be easily removed and interchanged based on the season or fashion.
