reciprocal syntax by BCXSY explores the outcome of creative exchange

BCXSY has collaborated with digital artists XORXOR and binaura in reciprocal syntax, an interactive installation exploring the outcome of a creative exchange between two beings. set within the design museum holon as part of the conversations show curated by maria cristina didero, the immersive installation consists of a seesaw surrounded by a semi-transparent projection fabric suspended from a rectangular frame resembling a display case.

once inside the reciprocal syntax frame by BCXSY, visitors can start interacting with the installation and discovering — without any instructions — what it is all about. as soon as the seesaw is set in motion, visual elements are projected onto the suspended fabric thanks to the integrated sensor that continuously registers parameters, varying according to the specific state of the piece at a given moment.

visitors are immersed in the real-time generated audiovisual content, and intuitively, will understand that it’s their movement the one that controls the images. like that, they are left to explore and discover the effects of the interaction, as they go through a journey towards a common language of abstract landscapes, continuously evolving and transforming around them. overall, the installation provides a glimpse into our own creative exchange and exemplifies the discovery, development and use of a common language.

‘as a cooperative of two imaginative individuals, our work process is often comprised of a continuous back and forth dialogue,’ says BCXSY. ‘alongside more pragmatic manners, such as research and experimentation, we develop our own, rather intuitive, playful and abstract language. engaged in this perspective, the definitions of our personal contributions become more and more obscure as our minds seem to resonate. through a constant stream of exchange and reflections, bits and pieces start falling into place and distinctive patterns and narratives are conceived. it is as if a new, correlative universe emerges and encircles us – its creators.’
