japanese startup company morirobo has collaborated with design studio UO to create an automatic crepe making device that resembles a vintage record player. named ‘Q’, the machine pours the dough, bakes it, and scoops it up, exactly how a chef with master craftsmanship would do. saving time and effort, this smart crepe maker makes for a charming addition to any kitchen.

morirobo set out to develop this product in order to solve the shortage of human resources in the restaurant/food industry, which has been an upcoming problem in japan. UO, who was in charge of the design for ‘Q’, focused on creating an efficient, open device, where the crepe making process is visible to the user at all times. this comes as a surprise, especially since most automatic machines are considered as a ‘black box’ that hides what’s going on inside.

in ‘Q’, as the dough is dropped from the top tank, the heated disc-shaped griddle spins slowly just like a record player, baking the crepe dough consistently. the charm of the device is extended, thanks to the little nostalgic details that refer to the iconic cooking and audio equipment of the 60s and 70s.

 

 

 

the device is made of corrosion-resistant stainless steel, again drawing influence from the products of the 60s and the 70s, and its style combines a mechanical appeal with a familiar, endearing look. with its innovative, creative design, ‘Q’ seems to fascinate users, who show nothing but enthusiastic reactions when observing it. especially, when it comes to young kids, they smile curiously while gazing at the spinning machine, that slowly prepares the warm crepes.
