atsushi shindo’s LIMINAL installation radiates rhythmic light at salonesatellite 2024

liminal illuminates at milan design week

Illuminating Milan Design Week’s SaloneSatellite exhibition, Atsushi Shindo’s LIMINAL is a radiant installation that transcends conventional notions of space and functionality. Ring-shaped components crafted from flat cast iron materials intricately intertwine around a single LED line light as they suspend from the ceiling, evoking an aesthetic reminiscent of jewelry. Together they signify an ethereal realm between the intermediate and the perceived, where atmospheres take on a tangible presence akin to living entities. In the structure, metal parts of varying sizes adorn each ring, arranged in a single row on both sides, creating ambiguous outlines within the space.

Beyond its physical structure, LIMINAL exudes a quiet magnetism that draws viewers into a contemplative state. Spanning 6 meters, the artwork’s grand scale gradation and occasional faint glow evoke landscapes and symbols transcending temporal and spatial boundaries, giving rise to a quiet gravitational pull. This subtle luminosity, coupled with the gentle bounces of the steel plates when touched, imbues the space with a pleasant rhythm of movement and a mesmerizing ambiance.

Atsushi Shindo’s vision extending across various sculptural expressions of lighting fixtures, centers around the concept of ‘designing atmosphere’ — a philosophy that explores the interplay between space, product, and artwork. For the Japanese designer, the allure of the ‘in-between’ holds particular fascination, representing a realm of mingling margins and endless possibilities. Through LIMINAL, he invites viewers to explore these liminal spaces where they can let their imaginations roam and envision blank spaces amid this quiet gravity.
