during milan design week 2019, italian designer antonio aricò presents a poetic documentary that tells his fascinating story of art, craft, and collaboration. ‘le radici e le ali’ — meaning ‘roots and wings’ — focuses on the theme of identity that runs throughout many of his successful projects. the film was born out of a desire to capture and share the rich experience of collaboration between aricò and his grandfather. beginning with this personal story, the compelling documentary shifts from artisanal craft to contemporary industrial design. ‘le radici e le ali’ premiers at 7pm on april 8, 2019 at arci bellezza.

antonio aricò is an italian designer from calabria, a region in southern italy

the documentary aims to describe the artistic figure of antonio through the narrative of fragmented histories. it pulls together contrasting voices, merging the past and the contemporary, the local and the global. the voices of alberto alessi and stefano seletti intertwine with the themes covered by the documentary, while the humanity of manual labor is explained through two figures: antonio’s grandfather saverio zaminga, and the ceramics master rocco condurso — who was one of the last remaining ‘pignatari’ in seminara, calabria.

aricò presented his inaugural furniture collection during milan design week in 2012 named ‘back home’ —a highly personal collection designed and realized alongside his grandfather, the master carpenter from reggio calabria.

zaminga has collaborated with aricò on a number of occasions

fascinating visions and emotional stories are shared throughout, with contributions from aricò and zaminga weaved alongside those of alberto alessi, stefano seletti, silvia ariemma, laura polinoro, francesca appiani, elena salmistraro, fedele zaminga, tito malara, and anna maria gullì. ‘le radici e le ali’, which was produced by altrove with additional support from delvis, will premiere at 7pm on april 8, 2019 at arci bellezza.
