'companion species' is a series of DIY furniture designed for both you and your cat

bangkok-based design practice, animali domestici, has created the ‘companion species’ furniture series, designed for both humans and cats. the first prototype, recently exhibited during bangkok design week 2019, is a rocking chair made of scratching rope, that offers two ‘seats’ for both you and your cat. with it’s hanging components appearing as pet toys, and soft rocking motion, the chair is constructed to engage with your feline friends.

the design by animali domestici looks to provide homes with a domestic space that is both human and pet friendly. to achieve this concept, the designers have also paid specific attention to how the chairs will be used by the end-user. for example, the pieces are designed to smooth the use of technological devices like laptops and tablets when rocking on the chair, creating a comfortable working environment while the cats are engaged in feline activities. 

the furniture pieces are designed to be potentially self fabricated and eventually personalized. for this reason, the materials are easy to find off the shelf, and the assembly techniques are compatible to DIY skills. the intention of creating a product that could be downloaded, self-made and personalized, relates with a reflection towards the value of our objects: the possibility of customization, of investing family-time in the process of making, creates a specific affection to the object itself, that will extend its life span in times of fast consumption.
