'RE_DE' is a lamp made from recycled fishing nets by andré teoman and ana rita pires

designers andré teoman and ana rita pires present their new project, RE_DE – a lamp made from recycled fishing nets. the project has been conceived in an effort to provide a new use for the countless nets and nylon threads that pile up on beaches and get lost in the sea. as these filaments become microparticles later, the become potentially dangerous, killing animals and destroying the food chain.

the duo, teoman and pires, have collected the threads from fishing nets and woven them into a traditional loom, giving them a new body, joining them with other plastics, and transforming then them into a mesh. this recycled material can then be used in lamps, coverings, screens, and textiles. the name ‘RE_DE’ comes from the portuguese word for net, ‘rede,’ and represents the environmental conscience of the designers. the project is also inspired by the prefix ‘re’, which is used at the beginning of words to mean an action done again, or to describe a gesture that repeats itself. the project embodies ideas of ‘reusing’ ‘rethinking,’ and ‘recycling,’ deriving from this idea of ​​a beginning, a new life, a new opportunity.
