commissioned by airbnb, belgian design duo muller van severen are offering an intimate exploration of their shared home during design miami/ 2017 in more ways than one. not only has the pair recreated their living room with ‘a wild thing’ in miami, a precise replica including furniture, artworks, books and other objects, but their original home in ghent has been listed on airbnb.

‘a wild thing‘, the space at design miami/, has been created as a ‘home away from home’ – a special opportunity for visitors to experience how they live. interactive lightboxes with recorded scenes from their living room windows transport visitors to their home in belgium with the intention of sharing deeper meanings for treasured objects the designers possess.

exploring the relationship between guest and hosts, and the role objects play in connecting the dots, the space is filled with personal anecdotes from fien and hannes. a painting by hannes’ grandfather, noted artist dan van severen, is juxtaposed with a chair made by the couple’s young daughter. ambient sounds of the fireplace surround sculptures, important books and other artwork, the space throughout, playing on the contrast between high design and sentimental keepsakes.

meanwhile, back in belgium, guests are able to experience the original. a night in the couple’s evergem home, near ghent costs €200 per night – via airbnb – and gives design enthusiasts the chance to live among artworks and design pieces by the couple.

the installation aims to conjure an understanding of muller van severen’s family stories, daily routines, personal style, and network of friends, creating the essence of home and homecoming in a public space. it makes up part of airbnb’s mission to curate creative talent from around the world.
