‘after the bit rush: design in a post digital age’ and exhibition curated by lucas maassen and unfold, explores the notion of art and physical creation in our inextricably digitally infused reality. designers julian bond, james bridle, edhv, ruth gurvich, theo jansen, markus kayser, tim knapen, thomas lommée, jorge lopes dos santos, lucas maassen, raw color, minale maeda, jun mitani, yuri suzuki, the t-shirt issue, troika, and unfold, featured in the exhibition, looks at ideas of production in a post-digital world. 

the collection is a physically realized world formed through a digital consciousness. each of the works featured have been conceived and planned through the assistance of a screen, then actualized into a 3D reality. they have been realized in such a way that helps the observer recognize the inseparable digital and human worlds through design. the artists celebrate the ease and possibility of creation by means of a new digitized standard to design throughout the installation.

UK designers eva rucki, conny freyer and sebastian noel of the troika, known for their melding of science, art, architecture and design within their projects, present ‘falling lights’. the sculpture consists of fifteen devices, each containing a swarovski crystal optical lens and suspended from the ceiling. a computer orchestrates a movement of light reminiscent of falling rain.

UK-based artist markus kayser’s ‘solar sinter’ project is a sculptural work explores the sun’s potential to produce objects and was tested in the egyptian desert, sintering or creating a solid substance, resulting in glass from sun-heated sand.

‘foetus project’ by brazilian designer jorge lopes dos santos is a physical, three dimensional investigation of CT, MRI and ultrasound collected data.

the t-shirt issue of denmark has designed ‘digital portraits’. the collective has created fashionable pieces through digitized design. the shape of the garments are rebuilt into a 3D shape through the re-orientation of seams, first conceived through computer visualization.

dutch designer theo jansen’s ‘3D printed strandbeest’ is one of several strandbeets he has built. the development of 3D printing has created an ease in which jansen had not previously been able to imagine in the development of his collection.

french designer ruth gurvich has devised ‘MAT porcelain’. the line of porcelain objects have been created entirely by hand, yet the collection reflects the digital, mathematical aesthetic of contemporary design.

lucas maasen and raw color of the netherlands, have developed ‘D/struct’. the upload machine functions as such that the user donates a plastic product to the project. the objects are then pulverized, their remains stored in a clear bag. the true structure of the plastic product is documented and stored digitally, ready to be reprinted as a 3D model when the user has need for it again.
