zim & zou craft whimsical fleet of fictional aircraft from paper

french duo zim & zou shares images of their latest paper design project ‘EXODUS’ as an ode to travel. the 3-month-long personal project comprises eight different versions of fictional aircraft, finished in shades of purple, blue and red. displayed in acrylic casings and resting on a wooden base, the paper sculptures show an exceptionally high level of precision and meticulous craftsmanship from the artists. previously, the duo has also worked on projects with high-end clients, such as ‘woodland wonderland’ for hermès, and an architectural landscape background design for sparkling wine brand freixenet.

‘thrown in an endless movement, the aircraft fleet crosses time and space toward an unknown outcome.’ explains zim & zou. ‘like birds stuck in an eternal migration, they’re pursuing their dream of an elsewhere.’ anchored in craftsmanship, the artists have created all the elements of the composition by hand, from drawing to cutting and assembling —  giving rise to intricate and colorful sculptures. vibrant flat sheets of paper are whimsically given volume and form, uniquely expressing the poetry of ephemeral material.
