resonance of the invisible breathes in rhythm at c-mine, genk

Plastique Fantastique’s new kinetic installation, RESONANCE OF THE INVISIBLE, explores the breathing interplay of air and movement in two adjacent spaces within a former coal mine in Genk, Belgium. Audiences enter a vast initial room, empty yet bearing the spiritual presence of a transparent volume that expands and contracts in a continuous rhythm of inflation and deflation.

As the object moves up and down, inhaling and exhaling, it reflects an imaginary lift, evoking the confluence of labor and the underground. The surroundings are filled and emptied in an ever-changing perspective where industrial echoes are controlled and amplified.

plastique fantastique wraps the space with pulsing air

Moving into the second room, Plastique Fantastique has filled the space with an over-dimensional machine, once used to operate the lift. To enhance its presence, it is covered by a lightweight, translucent pneumatic structure that rhythmically extends and compresses. As the installation starts to breathe, the room pulses, turning a once static piece of machinery into a dynamic entity. Both spaces, orchestrated by an auditory landscape, resonate with the rubbing melodies of the post-organic mine.

Plastique Fantastique, the German creative design studio led by Marco Canevacci and Yena Young, has collaborated with Lucas Sere Peltzer, Carlo Barotti, Guy Stefanou, and Carsten Reith for RESONANCE OF THE INVISIBLE. The artwork is exhibited as part of the Any Way the Wind Blows summer arts festival, on view at C-Mine, Genk, from 22nd June to 15th September, 2024.
