following up on his previous work ‘sailing castle’, cheng-tsung feng has now unveiled yet another sailship-like structure, ‘sailing castle fuzhong (2021)’. the artist stretched translucent sails onto a wooden skeleton representing the roof shapes of the historic site in fuzhong, taiwan. the project takes shape as a pavilion that invites people to gather, commute and stay, while it symbolizes solidarity and manifests a sense of ritual.all images courtesy of fixer photographic studio

‘a fleet of ships moored at the dock and undulating sails waved above the sea’. cheng tsung feng depicts the concept for sailors to brave the open ocean and to return home after a voyage. ’embark the ships, hoist the sails, against the wind, brave the sea, we set off with fervent faith believing we will be home safely.’

the composition of sails intertwined with wooden structure reveals a tranquil maturity in capturing the roof shapes of heritage and cultural buildings in fuzhong area. fuzhong in new taipei city is a district with both old and new appearances. there are many modern buildings and traditional monuments and temples that give a special urban appearance.

taiwanese young artist is fascinated by exploring the wisdom condensed out of time hidden in traditional utensils. he is reluctant to let go of these intangible assets along with ancestral tools. thus, he inherits them by design and learns to create items from their story.
