teamlab: field of wind, rain, and sun materializes the elements

teamLab unveils its latest experiential project, ‘Field of Wind, Rain, and Sun’, in Higashi Osaka, Japan. This permanent series of installations, adjacent to the recently acquired Can Can Factory, demolishes and reimagines an industrial site as a vibrant grassland. Rooted in the Japanese art collective’s concept of ‘environmental phenomena,’ the works thus depart from conventional notions of static art to harness natural elements — wind, rain, and sunlight — as active participants in the creative process.

Only manifesting under specific environmental conditions, the artworks claim the site as an ever-evolving canvas. During strong winds, luminous visuals emerge in the sky; on rainy nights, falling droplets crystallize into floating points of light; and when the sun reaches its zenith, a full-circle rainbow appears for visitors who ascend. ‘The artworks do not exist independently, but are created by the environment which produces the various phenomena,’ writes the team.

ephemeral installations that shift with evolving natural cycles

teamLab’s collection of installations presents interactive spectacles where shifting environmental conditions orchestrate both soundscapes and visual symphonies, immersing visitors in an ever-changing sensory experience. Enso of the Sun transforms sunlight into a perfect, undistorted circular rainbow that hovers in the air, visible to anyone ascending the Staircase for the Sun apparatus during a cloudless midday. Meanwhile, the Sea of the Sun repurposes discarded glass salvaged from a local factory, crushed into fragments, into a radiant rock garden that glimmers under the afternoon sun. At night, it takes on a new life, morphing into a glowing, responsive landscape where light solidifies and flows based on visitors’ interactions.

Drawing on the ethereal beauty of wind and water, Spatial Calligraphy of Light and Wind uses the sky as its canvas to create glowing patterns that shift with the breeze. Activated by the wind, this artwork flows and shines, much like vortices sustained by the continuous movement of water. Its structure is transient, flexible, and dependent on the environment, mirroring the way life emerges from the flow of energy and matter. The Japanese collective complements this fluidity with Ephemeral Crystallized Rain, an artwork that manifests on stormy nights. Rain transforms into a constellation of floating lights, their dual-toned colors synchronized in a way unseen in nature, creating a hypnotic, crystalline order.

a tactile manifestation of temporal scales

teamLab’s Life is an Ephemeral Light Born in the Sea of Darkness further conjures radiant forms that emerge from darkness and return to it, a poetic representation of life’s impermanence. Similarly, Sea of Light on the Pedestal captures waves of light born from the surrounding environment, sustained only as long as the conditions endure, reinforcing the interdependence of art and ecology. In contrast, Copper Fossils provides a tactile glimpse into a different temporal scale, preserving material traces of transformation and decay. Together, the artworks articulate only dependent on physical matter and its shifting cycles.

Visitors to the site can also experience teamLab’s A Cafe in the Field of the Can Can Factory, where the collective’s ethos — that art becomes an inherent extension of its surrounding environment – resonates across every detail. Pouring a cup of tea is presented as an artistic act, or performance, with the liquid glowing and producing shifting tones that engage in a rhythmic dialogue with nearby cups.
