from now until january 9, 2016, new york’s bryce wolkowitz gallery presents a selection of images from the series ‘day to night’ by stephen wilkes. since 2009, the american photographer has been compressing the passage of time into a single frame, capturing the fleeting moments of humanity and light as they change throughout the day. from a fixed camera angle, wilkes snaps thousands of photos over the course of 24 hours, then chooses the most interesting moments and seamlessly blends them into a single photograph in post-production.

using the camera as a device to collect information and post-production as a method to build new landscapes, wilkes visualizes spaces and scenes that are not perceivable in reality, but form part of our collective memory. vibrant scenes from the macy’s thanksgiving day parade in new york and the serengeti national park in tanzania are visualized as if day and night have been squeezed into a single view, expressing the passage of time in visual form.
