starlight immersion by karolina halatek encircles viewers in a haze of light and fog

as part of the international light art biennale in hildesheim, germany, artist karolina halatek presents ‘starlight immersion’ – an installation commissioned by EVI lichtungen. the work invites viewers to stand in the middle of a small circle, where an array of spotlights point into the center. this bright, white light is combined by a haze of fog to create an unknown situation, challenging perceptions and affording a moment of contemplation within the art piece.

with halatek‘s latest installation, the artist quite literally puts the viewer in center stage. illuminated by the continuous light cone, yet shrouded by the haze of fog, the focus is completely shifted to them. as the spotlights swivel and rotate, the viewer cannot see the outside world, therefore the attention is moved onto their own being. in effect, the starlight immersion intends to envelop audiences in themselves, providing a quiet moment of reflection. 

during EVI lichtungen, the city of hildesheim was transformed into an extraordinary art trail. in the decentralized exhibition project, international artists and their works enter into a dialogue with significant places within the city. façades become canvases, hidden and little-noticed places become visible, sacred and secular sites become negotiating spaces for contemporary art. the international light art project thus favors new perspectives on well-known and formative urban locations and invites residents and visitors alike to re-explore the city.
