ray king animates new taipei city center with polychromatic landscape

a vast wall of dichroic glass facets suspends in space, radiating from the center point of the grand hall at the new taipei city conference center. the structure is called ‘point of view’, a synthetic landscape by ray king that is meant to greet visitor’s to taiwan’s ministry of culture.

the glass rectangles are supported by an intricate stainless steel tube and cable structure

the artwork can be viewed from three different levels, and most intimately from the mezzanine. on the main level, the arrangement takes the form of a sinuous fan spreading out into the spacious area. from the lower floors, the rectangles are seen as a gentle series of golden contours.

the artwork can be viewed from three different levels in the grand hall

sunlight floods the intricate structure of stainless steel tubes and cables from the expansive east and west windows. its metallic panels bend and split the light rays into color that is reflected as splashes of gold, indigo, turquoise, and magenta. the projections play throughout the day and continue into the night, cast by programmed led lamps that create gentle changes of polychromatic patterns on the surrounding architecture. the result is an ethereal effect that seamlessly floats as a curved louver array.
