united visual artists’ large-scale light installation plays with the perception of time

as an investigation on our subjective experience of the passing of time, united visual artists (UVA) has realized a large-scale installation that plays with the perception of light and space. the work continues UVA’s series of kinetic sculptures that began with ‘momentum‘ in 2013 — a ‘spatial instrument’ that revealed the relationship between expectation and awareness when intersected within a physical space.

presented as part of the dark mofo arts event in hobart, australia, ‘our time’ comprises a sequence of suspended pendulums that swing at a steady pace. within this physical expanse, the devices seem apparently unhindered by the laws of nature, where no single time measurement applies. visitors enter UVA‘s multi-sensory, multi-dimensional installation and find themselves immersed in an environment of movement, light and sound. as the pendulums swing — each to their own rhythm — light traces the undulating path and sound echoes throughout, making the experience of the passing of time almost tangible.
