new office works weaves together districts of hong kong for large-scale installation

a proposed public artwork by architecture and design practice, new office works, combines five graphic representations of different hong kong districts. entitled ’embroideries of east kowloon’, the large-scale installation is composed of five circular layers that overlap one another to create an intricate network of lines and circles. each layer is an abstraction of the symbol representing one of the five districts that the new east kowloon cultural centre will bring together.

made of steel, the five layers overlap each other to generate a continuous fabric, reminiscent of the textile industry that is part of the site’s industrial past. alternating between moments of density and openness, ambiguity and clarity, the perception of the installation constantly shifts depending on a person’s viewpoint. the public installation is designed by new office works to incite curiosity and invite passersby to come close-up and experience the space created in between these abstracted districts.
