san francisco-based artist mona caron has created a large-scale mural of a wildflower blooming across a jersey city’s building façade. a lonely joe pye weed — a local native wild plant— dances unruly with its dense sharp leaves rising from a black backdrop of a 20-storey building.

mona caron focuses on community-informed and site-specific murals in public space. this monumental art piece is the latest of her work and takes part in the jersey city mural arts initiative. the swiss-born artist has investigated stop-motion animation as part of her ‘weeds’ project, and co-creates visuals for street actions responding to social and environmental issues.

‘a local native wild plant, a so-called joe pye weed, will be facing off the skyline across the hudson on its own. a dream of nature winning, of plant life being the one towering over us for a change, putting us back in our place,’ as mentioned in her instagram post.
