monica bonvicini: RUN
‘RUN’ by monica bonvicini

monica bonvicini’s sculpture for the 2012 london olympics ‘art in the park’ programme was recently completed.

in daylight, the letters will act as a mirror for visitors and their surroundings, and at night the letters will become more transparent
and glow with internal LED lighting.

bonvicini’s work is derived from musical references such as ‘running dry’ by neil young and the velvet underground song ‘run run run’,
which have also influenced her previous art. drawing on the many uses of the park, it was a natural choice to return to these themes
and the word ‘RUN’ for this permanent work.

‘RUN’ is the largest standalone artwork on the olympic park (at nine metres tall (30 feet) and is situated on the plaza of the
6,500-capacity copper box.

it’s exciting to see the work finally start on site after being awarded the commission in summer 2010. ‘RUN’ is already blending
in perfectly with the landscape, avoiding monumentality through the mirroring of the surroundings. at night the psychedelic light reflections
will illuminate the work in an exciting, elegant and witty way, reflecting the great liveliness of london.
