‘how do you make art for people who usually don’t like art?’ is the question that triggered max siedentopf to create ‘paintings league’, a series of graphic art pieces. the london-based artist sought to turn iconic football teams’ shirts into acrylic-on-canvas paintings. in an attempt to satisfy both ‘the most critical art enthusiast and the most serious football fanatic’ siedentopf created a painterly and photographic homage to soccer jerseys.all images courtesy of max siedentopf

tackling the subject of football and art, max siedentopf dedicated an illustrated book including bizarre photographs of fans wearing club shirts. after his research, the young artist came up with the theory that ‘these people who avoid museums and galleries are often the same people who would rather spend their time watching football’. catering to this newfound audience, ‘paintings league’ is addressed to art enthusiasts which will appreciate the minimalist, abstract art pieces and brushstrokes of the paintings, as well as football lovers who enjoy looking at their favorite team colors.

‘paintings league’ pays homage to iconic football teams like fc bayern münchen, inter milan, chelsea fc, manchester united, and fc barcelona. ‘just like in football, the paintings act like a league. each painting represents a diverse group of people through their interests, passions, and backgrounds and ultimately tries to be the champion of the paintings league.’
