exploring the role of text in our urban society, ‘the untitled project’ by chicago-based photographer matt siber consists of images completely devoid of the printed word. ranging from scenes of the highway to snapshots of products in a drugstore, the series is laid out in two parts: the photoshopped image is presented in correlation with the isolated text arranged in their original placement and composition. by distilling the raw photograph into a set of individual images that can be read separately, the many relationships between words, logos, colours, symbols and architecture can be observed in a coherent manner.

notably silent both visually and contextually, the photographs clearly highlight the dominant role that text plays in today’s modern landscape. by muting out their presence, the series encourages the viewers to challenge the literal form, as well as to explore other tools of communication that are utilized in the medium of signage.
