mathery studio has designed an immersive children’s space at the national gallery of victoria, melbourne, which focuses on transforming the surroundings through the simple act of drawing. ‘pastello’ is derived from the italian word for pastel — the principal material embodied by the project. the dedicated environment and tools they have created are based around the re-imagination of traditional drawing devices and processes, and shifts perceptions about the typical ways we think about materiality and media.

at the exhibit, children will be presented with re-configured drawing contraptions and improvised coloring utensils, like crayon-clad helmets and shoes, which they may use to express themselves in odd and quirky ways through random bodily expression. the space becomes the media, activated by the participants, where the walls and floors translate into architectural and creative surfaces. the interactive exhibition can be experienced at the national gallery of victoria from now until august 31st, 2014.
