with his commuter bicycle and camera equipment in hand, manuel alvarez diestro has travelled around south korea to document the country’s new housing developments. for this series of images, the spanish photographer focuses on the interaction between the new town’s facades and the surrounding context. the resulting photographs hone in on the highly densified elevations, where patterns of colors and shapes repeat to create an almost abstract canvas.

south korea is still going through an expansive process of urbanisation all across the territory, and these constructions can be found on the border outside main cities and in the inner countryside. two thirds of the terrain is mountainous and the small size of the country pushes construction into a vertical and highly densified approach. with his latest photography project, alvarez diestro discovers these unprecedented spaces of standardised architecture.
