LEXUS + sergio albiac: art is motion draws you while driving

barcelona-based visual artist sergio albiac has conceived an interactive art installation inside of a LEXUS that generates a real time portrait of the driver based on data collected over the course of the trip. albiac collaborated with the japanese car manufacturer for ‘art is motion‘: a project investigating human identities through technology integrated artwork. each time a new journey begins, data — such as driving style, duration of travel, decision making, and traffic events — is collected from sensors within the vehicle. based on the composite information, the aesthetic of the final portrait changes. in real time, a computer-generated facial impression takes shape on a screen on the car’s dashboard. the combination of albiac’s hand brushwork and coded software generate a series of personal images that records a part of the driver’s experience. each resulting appearance is a hybrid of a person and technology, originally derived from genetics, but physically shaped by choice and chance.

the installation is currently customized for a single driver, walter vanhaerents, a belgian entrepreneur and passionate art collector for which albiac’s project’s title ‘the generative identity of walter vanhaerents’ takes its namesake. the technology-integrated  portraits below are of his experience as a driver.
