kehinde wiley’s works typically draw on the painting traditions of the past, drawing influences from the likes of gainsborough, titian and ingres to name a few, combinining historical styles with contemporary subjects. his newest series of paintings are now on show at the studio museum in harlem, new york. depicting young, urban african-american men in poses which are drawn from public sculptures from dakar, senegal and lagos nigeria, wiley’s larger than life figures comment on the portrayal of masculinity and physicality within the culture that surrounds black and brown young men.
