drawn to the abstract qualities of form, space and chroma inherent in suburban architecture, australian artist joanna lamb investigates these themes through her paintings, sculpture, and neons. the ‘15 color series’ recently presented at art stage singapore by sydney-based sullivan + strumpf comprised a body of work she limited to a palette of 15 different tones and hues, painted as flattened imagery of domestic interior and exterior spaces. the compositions are reduced and abstracted to their most readable elemental forms, simplifying chairs down to their basic geometrical framework and leveling three-dimensionality into flattened visual arrangements. parodying the symmetrical perfection of a real estate brochure’s highly-stylized photos, the vibrant images strip the fabricated shots of nuance, filler and grit. meshing in aesthetic sync with one another, the chosen colors vividly illustrate the landscapes and residential scenes, making each viewer feel a part of the piece.
