portuguese artist joana vasconcelos has wrapped a fender stratocaster guitar in a vibrant flower crochet pattern made of wool. dubbed flower power, the psychedelic guitar references the 1960s slogan of the anti-war movements happening at the time. the musical instrument was created for the big art auction, an event hoping to help the big issue, a UK-based magazine offering employment opportunities to people with low income.

known for updating the arts and crafts concept to the 21st century, joana vasconcelo’s pieces incorporate everyday objects with irony and humor, creating a bridge between the domestic environment and public space, while questioning the status of women, our consumerism society and the collective identity. this piece expands on many of vasconcelos’ topics, incorporating embroidery, vibrant hues and a commentary on womanhood. funny enough, this particular guitar was designed over 60 years ago and was popularized by the likes of jeff beck, eric claptone, david gilmour, and jimi hendrix who actually plucked the strings with his front teeth. by bringing it to a more domestic environment, the artist has added a new layer to the project.

‘music has always been a huge part of my life,’ vasconcelos told my modern met. ‘to the extent that it often finds its way into my sculptures, from the portuguese fado to sinatra’s strangers in the night or bizet’s carmen. therefore, I’m delighted to take part in this project that brings together a social cause and the love of music.’
