intensely tactile, colorful and wild sculptural and neon works will engulf the downstairs gallery space at sullivan+strumpf, sydney for the exhibition of japanese artist hiromi tango. the artist’s unique practice has led to a series of beautifully crafted and mesmerizingly intricate works. for this show, tango will immerse audiences in a brilliant spectrum of hues, shape and light, drawing their visual characteristics and metaphorical context from a psychiatric perspective.

the japan-native relocated to australia in 1998, without knowing any english, the circumstances of which left her with a sense of cultural displacement. ‘promised’ reflects the development of hiromi’s art practice within the context of a personal journey of emotional pain and the interchange between artist and therapist, the ‘magic ‘of the talking cure and the ‘promised’ change, but, within the process and journey of the therapy ‘tears’ and the amputation of the negative parts of self (the ‘lizard tail’) become manifest.’ describes dr patricia jungfer, consultant psychiatrist ‘within the process of the psychological contact, emotions, demons and experiences were magically transformed and this transformation becomes expressed in the exquisite and intricate works of art.’
