heavy sea by artist pejac confronts modern day failings towards the earth

spanish artist pejac uses a landscape of disused tyres for the setting of his fictional landscape film ‘heavy sea’. the footage shows a man trudging through hundreds of black rubber vehicle wheels, clutching only one orange lifeboat ring. the concept originated from a watercolour painting he created a few years ago, which featured one solitary lifesaver. after a trip abroad the artist came across a dump similar to the painting he had made. he says ‘it was a poetic nightmare made real’ as he found himself physically confronted with the painting he had created.

pejac used this experience for the basis of his project. ‘heavy sea’ metaphorically presents the failure between human kind and earth today. the solitary nature of the film causes us to recognise the issues surrounding disused objects and our inability to deal with this problem.
