informed by the style of mazda‘s ‘KODO – soul of motion‘ design direction, london-based artist gerry judah has realized a monumental 40-meter high sculpture for the 2015 goodwood festival of speed. directly in front of goodwood house, two mazda racers spear into the sky on a twisting track of steel beams, towering above visitors attending the international sporting event. the pair of vehicles include the le mans-winning mazda 787B, a homage to the automobile maker’s racing heritage, and the LM55 vision gran turismo car, created for the gran turismo 6 playstation racing simulation game.

‘when we first started talking about the central feature at goodwood, we wanted it to exemplify the brand through our kodo design philosophy, said mazda executive officer and general manager design division ikuo maeda. ‘gerry has faithfully expressed our brand in a striking and beautiful structure that is clearly kodo. there is a lightness and strength to the sculpture, yet it gives the cars movement and energy.’

418 white, solid steel bars are piled into a tower that twists and turns as it rises towards the sky. the criss-crossing layers intertwine as a fluid, simple, yet strong coil, which lead viewers’ eye to the mazda racing cars at the very top. together, the bars amass to 120 tonnes, their foundation goes down 3 meters in to the earth, and if they were laid end to end they would stretch a distance of more than 1 mile long.
