hungarian photographer, gergely vida, shares his unique reflection on the year gone by in this series called ‘clouds’. to create the abstract pictures, vida looked at the 10 most globally searched topics of 2020. he then took as many images on the given topic as his chosen search engine allowed, layered them on top of each other, and created these artworks below.

each final piece is composed of 600-1200 images. from the tragic death of american basketball player, kobe bryant, to coronavrius, the series surveys the most talked about events of last year. there’s also a nod to how our lifestyles changed in 2020 with ‘zoom’ and ‘google classrooms’ being the fourth and tenth most searched topics.

the layered images aptly reflect the rolling mass of information that now bombards us in the age of the internet. gergely vida also effectively captures the different moods of 2020: repetition, some playfulness, and a lot of tension and uncertainty.
