our modern society is caught up by both the beauty of technology and nature. trying to find a balance between these two things which is posing a challenge. with the development of- and increased use of- personal mobile devices, we have forgotten what peace and reconciliation are–the notion of togetherness having become something subordinate. eko nugroho re-introduces ideas of unity and harmony back into our culture through his sculptural series ‘flower generation’, referencing the peace movement of the late 60’s and 70’s as a reminder to us that we are descendants of that wave of that campaign. his work is embedded in local traditions and global popular culture marked by a strong socio-political commentary. the two life-size figures the indonesian artist has created are seen either holding a gun, or on all fours, their vulnerability blanketed in a suit of bright pink flowers. nugroho’s ‘flower generation #2’ (2012) is being exhibited in ‘sip! indonesian art today’ at berlin’s ARNDT gallery from april 27th to june 1st, 2013.
