daniel canogar projects family on surfaces throughout their home

wanting a deeply personal piece of art to accompany the recent remodeling of their family home, madrid art collectors have commissioned audio visual artist daniel canogar to create a one-of-a-kind family portrait, that is projected on surfaces throughout their house. the two-fold video animation-based installation features the collectors, their children, extended family and close friends, who were asked to perform over a green-screen surface while being captured by an overhead video camera. first asked to crawl, and then encouraged to be creative, the dynamic and kinetic family portrait literally runs through the home, both inside and out.

in the guest bathroom, an overhead projector casts figures in the sink, playfully crawling along the porcelain surface and flowing down the drain. reappearing in the garden, the family silhouettes climb a wall adjacent to the pool, creating a sense of bodies emerging from the water. working the dwelling’s architect, canogar positioned the two projectors — both of which are completely soundproof and can be turned on or off remotely using a smartphone or a computer connected to the home’s wifi — into the contours of the building, so that the technology remains completely invisible. the project’s emphasizes lies in the contemplation of how the life of a physical structure is not merely in its tangible form, but also in the activities of those who inhabit it.
