as part of the permanent collection of IOMA art center in beijing, cyril lancelin of creative studio town and concrete explores data and nature’s abundance in an immersive sculpture made of giant melons. the artist is particularly interested in the evolution of our society linked to technology, and in particular, to the proliferation of data specially since our daily life has been turned upside down by its ever-increasing consumption.

the artist uses a percentage breakdown to create immersive installations with simple shapes. his sculptures are thus composed of primitive forms that he assembles, with the addition of objects that he finds aesthetically fascinating such as melons, cacti, and flamingos. these elements play a landmark role through their shape or texture. after being faced with acceleration in data consumption, they define new scales of value and anchor points.
in this sculpture, the melon brings the figurative to the composition by connecting the abstract and parametric forms to a representation of life. the fruit resulting from the imagery of abundance of nature and the pop universe, is already a stylized representation of the fascinating fruit by its texture and color. in his creation, cyril lancelin explores a universe mixing the real and the unreal, he represents artificial landscapes built by the multiplication of data.
the melons embody the symbol of heavenly life in the digital or real world. they also represent our overconsumption of images by being the witness of the transformation that our planet is undergoing at the present time. ‘mix’ is a depiction where nature and data are linked to a representation and come together in a real and unreal scene. the artwork is exhibited in the group show “diversity” at IOMA art center in beijing.
