transforming the classic eames shell into experimental chairs, ‘garden of eames’ perfectly captures labrooy‘s surrealist aesthetic. a large furry cat prowls atop a seat, a neon pink sheep wears one around its neck, and colorful bunnies jump from backrests. other iterations feature seemingly stretched out elements and graffiti-inspired motifs.
labrooy’s ‘garden of eames’ project is ongoing, as the artist plans to update his website with new iterations as they are completed.
the classic eames molded plastic & fiberglass chair is designed by charles and ray eames. since its inception, the design has been transformed into dining chairs, side chairs, rocking chairs, and stools.
the eames shell chair appeared on the market in 1950 in response to the ‘international competition for low-cost furniture design’, sponsored by the museum of modern art. the competition was motivated by the urgent need in the post-war period for low-cost housing and furnishing designs adaptable to small housing units. since its inception, the design has been transformed into dining chairs, side chairs, rocking chairs, and stools.
