sunset furniture by changhyun lim saturates design objects in warm, pastel hues

korean designer changhyun lim wanted to integrate the soft colors of the sunset into a furniture collection. he injected the pastel hues into storage furniture, meant to be seen from a distance by the user. the colored, translucent glass, combined with warm wood and orthogonal geometries, gave birth to the sunset series. 

for the series, lim designed the pieces to be seen from afar, so the user could appreciate the pastel colors. the first piece, sunset no.1 is a TV stand since it is a kind of furniture that is seen from the  longest distance, without the user interacting with it. sunset no.2 was designed as a storage drawer because the user usually does not touch the furniture unless they want to get something out of it, but is seen by from any angle in the space. 

the designer got inspired by buildings that reflect the sunset, especially the hues he observed in seoul. at the time when the sunset appears, the whole building seems as if it absorbs the beautiful colors, and that was the image was the designer wanted to portray in the series. just like in the buildings, the designer wanted the image of the sunset to be able to be seen in all four sides of the art work as if the colored illusion was covering the whole piece. 

the making of the pastel hues was challenging for lim. to recreate the sunset’s appearance, the designer poured small amounts of resin mixed with a few colors to make layers. the layers of resin made beautiful gradation of colors and showed deeper colors of the red, orange, yellow, and blue tones. the resin was poured in a flat mold and then cut with cnc for clean edges. sunset no.1 was made with walnut so that the dark body color would not interfere with the colorful red-orange-yellow-blue toned resin. sunset no.2 was made with steel and then painted with silver paint to maximize the feeling of the city vibe.
