Casa Batlló announces quayola for 2025 facade mapping

Italian multimedia artist Quayola will reimagine the iconic facade of Antoni Gaudí’s Casa Batlló in Barcelona with Arborescent, an immersive projection mapping inspired by natural growth systems and environmental responses. Presented as part of the 2025 edition of the Barcelona landmark’s 2025 The Heritage of Tomorrow program, the work synthesizes the organic architectural inspirations of Antoni Gaudí with digital art. ‘Quayola is a perfect fit for our principles: he merges the classical with the modern and decodes nature with a personal perspective and unique aesthetic. Moreover, his work has a sculptural component that is ideal for enhancing a façade like Casa Batlló, full of reliefs and symbolism.’ highlights Gary Gautier, CEO of Casa Batlló.

Casa Batlló, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has become a hub for innovation, combining art, culture, and technology. Its annual facade mapping is a cornerstone of Barcelona’s cultural calendar, with previous collaborators including the artists Refik Anadol and Sofía Crespo (find designboom’s previous coverage here), who have transformed the exterior of the monument through interdisciplinary works.

arborescent draws from gaudi’s work and the power of nature

Quayola, known for exploring the tensions between the real and artificial, merges classical aesthetics with advanced computational processes. His work has been showcased globally at institutions such as the V&A Museum in London, Palais de Tokyo in Paris, and the National Art Center in Tokyo, among others. ‘As I constantly research new relationships with the heritage of our visual culture, working with such an iconic symbol as Casa Batlló is something very special. Immersing myself in Gaudí’s work has reiterated to me the boundless power of nature as an endless source of artistic inspiration,’ Quayola shares.

Scheduled for February 1 and 2, 2025, the mapping will run every 30 minutes from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 pm, accompanied by an original soundtrack composed by the artist. Casa Batlló continues its partnership with Integrated Systems Europe (ISE), the world’s leading audiovisual systems and technology event, held annually in Barcelona.
