celebrated german photographer candida höfer brings a piece of her homeland to new york for an exhibition at sean kelly gallery. presented for the first time in the united states, the images on display have all been taken in düsseldorf, giving the exhibition its title ‘from düsseldorf’.

after decades, the german city remains an important influence on her work, following her studies under conceptual artists bernd and hilla becher, and its source as one of the remarkable artistic movements in germany since the bauhaus. in the years since, höfer has continued to photograph düsseldorf with a fresh eye and distinct composition, revealing a minimalist direction in her work.

alongside the large-scale, color images of baroque churches, rococo halls, and modern opera houses — works that embody höfer’s oeuvre — are a selection of photographs from the artist’s new portfolio. rather than the big picture, these compositions instead focus on architectural detail, structure, color and form — spiraling staircases, glass windows and doorways. these images uncover abstract forms emerging from extreme angles and close-ups of interior and exterior spaces, creating a dynamic visual dialogue throughout the exhibition that explores both the historical timeline and continued vision of the city and the artist.
