situated along the waterfront of the vast, flat landscape of avilés in northwest spain is centro niemeyer, said to be the most important project in europe by the brazilian architect oscar niemeyer. while the cultural center is expressed as a composition of sweeping, minimal geometries punctuating the austere flatlands, the sterile context perfectly suits the sophisticated language of photographer benedict redgrove. here, redgrove captures his latest series with concept car design studio ‘roborace’ as a celebration of groundbreaking design within both the automotive and architectural worlds. the brazilian architect’s modernist masterpiece is an ideal backdrop for the robocar: the car of the future.

the series is presented by award-winning photographer benedict redgrove with creative studio INK. the visionary brand roborace engineers racing cars controlled by artificial intelligence. the robocar, designed by daniel simon, is the world’s first self driving electric race car. the concept designer is known for his automotive futurism and his vehicle designs in the films ‘oblivion’ and ‘tron: legacy.’ the graphic image of this model was visualized through a collaboration between simon and redgrove. the bold graphic language, like the design of the chassis, is clean and ultra-contemporary, expressive of the robocar’s sinuous, unusual form.

bringing his distinctive attention to detail, redgrove worked closely with the INK team to retouch the images. the photographs express the perfected balance between the robocar’s crafted curves, the modernist, almost surreal atmosphere of the centro niemeyer, and the contemporary aesthetic championed in his work. in an exhibit exploring the future of autonomous vehicles, visitors in london have the opportunity to view the the car — with a different exterior graphic design — at the science museum from june 12th 2019 until october 2020.
