a new suspected banksy piece has appeared on ilkeston road in nottingham as reported by the BBC. the public street artwork depicts a young girl hula-hopping next to a real bike that’s missing a black wheel — the one the girl’s playing with.

banksy hasn’t authenticated the work and a spokeswoman for the artist told the BBC that they didn’t have any information on it either. but the fact that the graffiti appeared in nottingham — the UK city with the highest coronavirus infection rates — makes many speculate that it might be, in fact, an original banksy. others say the bicycle may be a nod to the city’s well-known raleigh factory.

the BBC spoke with banksy expert prof paul gough, from arts university bournemouth who voiced his doubts regarding the piece being authentic. ‘the quality of the drawing in the hands and the feet isn’t as accomplished as I’ve seen in other works,’ he said. ‘and it’s not as topical. the last four or five pieces banksy’s done have been really addressing the crisis we’re in at the moment with wit and humor.’

after the artwork was found, a protective screen was put over. shortly after, the artwork was vandalized.
